The incident began in New Haven County around 4 p.m. Saturday, March 19 in Naugatuck when a person whose hand was stuck in a meat grinder was transported to Waterbury Hospital, the department said.

The patient was then transferred to Yale New Haven Hospital for removal of the grinder around 5:45 p.m., officials said.

Shortly after, doctors requested the New Haven Fire Department respond to the hospital to help with the removal, the department said.

Working closely with an orthopedic surgeon, the decision was made for the department to assist in the operating room, the department said.

A cutting operation plan was developed and three members from the fire department successfully removed the meat grinder, they added.

Early decisions by the Naugatuck and Waterbury Fire Departments helped in ensuring this was a "successful operation," the department said.

The woman's condition was not immediately known.
